Book and Film Reviews, Pet-Terrific Travel and Pomo's Telltale TiPs will keep you out of the dog house and put you into the K-9 insiders' world.

Tony Conza is the dad of WOOF Patrol Mascot, Pomo. Tony is the Founder of the Blimpie sandwich chain. His years of experience in the restaurant business led him to believe the way to one's heart is through food. Pomo agrees. One night over dinner he sat down and compiled what WOOF Patrol has since and most appropriately tagged "Little Bites".

The dog really did eat his homework.  11 year old Nick Morgan plays the saxophone in the band at Gulliver, a private school in south Florida.  On Monday, Nick was scheduled to practice but on Sunday Nick left his sax on the bed while the family went out for the afternoon.  When they returned, Nick discovered that Coby, his Lasa-Poodle, had chomped down on his mouth piece and chewed up all his reeds.  Mom had to make a “the dog ate my homework” call to the school. Symphony Space’s “Writers and their Dogs” Selected Shorts: A Celebration of the Short Story series presented authors Amy Hempel (The Dog of the Marriage) with Wanita, Labrador Retriever, Merrill Markoe (What the Dogs Have Taught Me) with

photographs of Jimmy, Ginger, Hedda and Puppyboy, her eclectic dog pack and Abigail Thomas (A Three Dog Life) and her Beagle, Henry.  Readings were by actresses Joan Allen and Patricia Kalember.  Pippi, Allen’s Boston Terrier and Blaze, Kalember’s black Lab, both pranced onto stage for a quick bow. Carol Kino wrote a feature for the New York Times entitled: Boldy, Where No Dog Had Ever Gone Before.  50 years ago the Russians sent Laika, a brave stray from the Soviet streets, up into space to become the first canine cosmonaut.  Recently, Marilyn Cvitanic, a New York artist, created a heartfelt canvas in Laika’s honor that captures the magic of space and the courage and tenacity of all dogs.
Hunter James Harries of Tama, Iowa was shot in the leg by his dog who stepped on his shotgun and tripped the trigger.  The dog was not arrested. An explosion at a construction site in Irvington, N.J. killed 1 worker and injured 4 others.

Iggy-Gate
A watchdog somehow escaped without injury. Golden Girl, Betty White, exhorts TV viewers to order discounted medications for their pets from PetMed.  The company continues to grow but has only a 5% market share. Continental Divide Dog Sled Adventures operates on 400 miles of trails in the Bridger-Teton and Shoshone National Forests in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  If you are interested in yelling, “MUSH!”, 2 good places to stay are the Brooks Lake Lodge & Spa (www.brookslake.com) and the Rusty Parrot Lodge & Spa (www.rustyparrot.com). A Latin proverb says, “If you lie down with dogs, you’ll get up with fleas.”  A few readers of Parade Magazine offered what they’d say: “If you lie down with dogs, you’ll take a real licking.”  “If you lie down with dogs, it’s time for a word with the desk clerk.” And, “If you lie down with dogs, fleas maybe the least of your worries.” 280 is the age in dog years Petland, Inc., a retail pet franchise, has been in business (40 in people years). Nothing went jiggy for Iggy and everyone landed in the doghouse, including Iggy, a black Brussels Griffon Terrier mix.  By now you may know that Iggy is the dog that Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi adopted from Mutts and Moms, a rescue group.  The saga began soon after the dog was adopted and then given to DeGeneres’ hair stylist, Cheryl.  Petfinder.com provides a look at some background regarding Mutts and Moms’ position. However, the video footage of Mutts and Moms partner, Marina Baktis, taking Iggy from Cheryl’s daughter, looks like a dog-napping of the worst kind.  Mutts and Moms acted on principal.  But what about common sense?  Petfinder Iggy-link; http://www.petfinder.com/statement.html and dog-napping; http://movies.tmz.com/2007/10/18/ellen-portia-rush-to-home-where-iggy-was-taken/5
