PUREBRED PASSION: VIZSLAS
Let the Velcro Dog Add a Little RED to your Life
Vizslas are nicknamed 'The Velcro Dog' for their at-your-side faithful companionship. They are tactile canines that enter life with complete adoration of their families. WOOF PatrolTM spoke with Linda Durham, dog mom to Ch. Renaissance Lord Of Th'Dance aka Konner, the country's #1 Vizsla in breed for 2007.

Linda Durham: Let me put it to you this way - he's good looking, a good kisser, he doesn't talk much but loves to cuddle and he looks up at me with affectionate puppy dog eyes. If he was a guy, a real guy, my husband would be in trouble.
At this year's Westminster Kennel Club Show, Konner came very close to being a contendor for Best In Show (BIS). Ch. Felicity's Diamond Jim, the English Springer Spaniel known as James, came away with the title. Prior to that, he placed first in the Sporting Group and Konner was runner up. A Vizsla may have won the most distinguished of dog world honors had judge Jeannette McGinnis been swayed by what Dog Channel reporters Allan Reznik and Susan Chaney referred to as
"thunderous applause" for Vizsla Ch. Renaissance Lord Of Th'Dance.
WOOF Patrol: Capturing second spot was no easy task for the youngster Konner, but he did it. Did Konner sense what was taking place?
Durham: His ears pinned back. Konner is a dog that requires you to win his heart. That night you could see him turn it on. He heard the crowd and was energized. His competition was experienced and well handled. He had won breed and then here we were in an experience we had never dreamed of.
Several times in history, Vizslas came close to extinction, particularly during the two World Wars. At the end of WWII, a limited number of the native Hungarian dogs were smuggled out from the the former Iron Curtain and brought to America. In 1950, an organized breeding program began in the United States. The breed became officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1960. It is still relatively rare but gaining in popularity.
The breed is the smallest of the smooth-coated pointers. Natural hunters that are gentle-mannered - even sometimes shy - these medium-sized sporting dogs are athletic and elegant. At all times these pooches consider themselves a member of the family, expecting to participate and share in all of the families' activities.

Leah Adams: Our family was looking for a dog. Online and elsewhere I did detailed research to find a breed for our family. Our criteria focused on a pooch with a temperment best suited to interact and love being with with our two boys. Enjoying water activities (we live on the water) and running with my husband were two other important traits we desired in a dog. Daisy May is great with our kids. She is passionate about water and has a talent for body surfing. Our girl keeps pace with my husband both in distance and speed when he runs.
Another attribute we were looking for was a dog that was not a shedder. We didn't want a must-vacuum 24/7 canine in our household. Because we travel, the weight could not exceed 40 pounds. The Vizsla profile was a perfect match for our home. It's a dog that wants to be with its family and enjoy an active lifestyle.
Daisy May is a family member capable of truly adapting to our needs. She's a top notch frisbee catcher and on the weekends joins in a game of flag football.
WOOF Patrol: Does she have good hunting instincts?
Adams: Yes. She can be outside all day chasing after birds and squirrels. But I have to tell you a story about Daisy May. One day while taking out the trash, I noticed her repeatedly going over to this one area. There was a concern, almost a panic in her expression. Daisy May was trying to tell me something. When I walked over I noticed a dead baby squirrel. We did the proper thing and buried the critter under the watchful eye of our dog. So yes, she has strong hunting instincts. She also has a sense of awareness and compassion towards others, even baby squirrels. |
Here's the showstopping factor with Vizslas: on looks alone they get stopped. Their fabulous russet coats turn heads. Their personalities engender the tone of a first date where hand-holding is the rule, not the exception. Sure they are adept at pointing but not toward flaws. Instead, they point at perfection and retrieve loyality, adoration and complete affection. Looking for love? Get a Vizsla.
